McMasters, sec retary of the American Sabbath Union, will preach - in Gastonia twice next Sunday, in the morning at the A. R. P. church and in the evening at the First Presbyterian church where union services will be held. Mr. Mc Masters was scheduled to speak here several weeks ago but was detained on account of illness. Died in San Francisco. J'Mrs.sJ1H. McDowell received a telegram last Tuesday an nouncing the sudden death on that date in San Francisco; Cal., of ; her mother, M rs, M Ward. She had been ill only a short time " an I her death was unex pected. SWitlr the exception of Mrs.. McDowell, all the mem bers of the family were at her bedside when v the 'end f came. Mrs. McDowell and children vis ited ; Mrs. Ward two years ago. Deceased was a native of Ire land. She came from her native country first to Toronto, , Can ada; later moved to New ' York and moved from - there to San Francisco. 'V-H BASEBALL TALK. ' : Jr' Iu less than another week the Gastonia baseball team will be complete and will be ready for regular games with all comers. Manager Lem Moore was well pleased with the practice game Saturday afternoon and the pros pects tor a winning . team ; are good. -. Although enough mate rial in already at hand for a good team, Mr ? Moore is trying to secure several others iu order to strengthen the team for a series uf games. StnUh, who has already been ' secured, will be the premier t wirier and it ' is very likely that both ! Morrow and 1 Fullenwilder will also be secured. ' The catcher has not yet been decided upou, but the manage ment is after several good men. Ellison who played first last year. will be at second base this year and first will be held by Parker. Rhyne will play short and ei ther Hammond or Gilliam will play third base. Hammond, it will be remembered, played third base lor Lincnlnton last year. In the field will be Miller, Mor row and probably Fullenwilder, when not in the box. I bis is only a probable arrangement and is subject to change. . AH the above players have been secured, rith .the excep tiun ot Fullenwilder who is now playing with Mt. Pleasant. It is also very likely that both Fox and Staples will be here again. NOTICE. On May 22nd. 1907. an examination will be held at the Charlotte Post- omce of applicants for clerk car rier. . The positions pay $600 the first year, $800 the second year, with an increase of $100 pet year until it reaches $1100 and after that a prob able increase ot mxi. The examination will embrace spelling, letter writing, copying. from plain copy, geography of the United State, arithmetic and correcting ad dresses. All applica tions must be filled with the Dis trict Secretary on or before the 8th j of May. Union Has Only Five Foreigners. Monroe Enquirer. North Caroliua has the small est percentage of foreign born population of any , State in the Umon-rless than two per cent. Ours is the most American State in the Union. Of the thirty- thousand people living in Union county only five, so far as we know, are foreign born. There j may be other foreign born cit izens in the county, but if there are others besides Messrs. John McCarten. W. H. Krauss. J. W. Rudge, Henry Sahadi and C. F. Newman we do- not -know who they are.
